The Harness Racing Museum & Hall Of Fame

Museum History

That the Hall of Fame should be located in the Cradle of the Trotter, Goshen, is only natural. It is in The Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame that the sport of harness racing is honored - its history, its heroes, and its story today. Housed in the Tudor-style building, that was once William Cane's Good Time Stable built by George Ford, owner of nearby Stony Ford Farm, in 1913, The Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame serves two communities - the community in which it resides as well as the international harness racing community. To the surrounding towns and their citizens, the Museum not only tells the story of harness racing, it also serves as a community cultural center and educational institution. Concert and lecture series, art shows, and even fashion shows attract thousands of people each year, while area school children have, as part of their curricula, education programs relating to the harness horse. A much larger community is also served by The Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame. To the harness racing world, the Museum is a mecca where the great men, women and horses of the sport's yesterdays and todays are honored. At the core of this Museum is the United States Harness Writers' Living Hall of Fame. It is here that top drivers, owners, innovators in the sport and its horses are honored with lifelike statuettes. The Museum's galleries house a splendid collection of Currier & Ives trotting prints and a wide variety of other art, including paintings by the most prominent equine artists of the 19th Century. Throughout the rest of the Museum are exhibits and displays featuring the harness horse and its influence on American culture past and present, the sulkies and silks of champions, harness racing art and memorabilia of the greats. The Institution is also home to the Peter D. Haughton Memorial Library and the Historic Clubhouse, a replica of the clubhouse at neighboring Historic Track, the first sporting site to be declared a registered National Historic Landmark. The Museum's services include promotional and educational programming, research facilities, and a membership program. Today, Goshen's Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame is an internationally known and respected institution dedicated to the sport of harness racing. It carries on the harness racing tradition which was born in this country and is now enjoyed worldwide.
