Walter Gibbons was born in Bridgeton, Nova Scotia in 1899. His horseman father, Wesley S. Gibbons, soon moved the family to Reading, Massachusetts, where Walter drove his first mile at eight, and at fourteen he was driving and training professionally. After a successful career as a trainer-driver, Gibbons became a dominant figure in officiating and racetrack management. At various times he served as Maine State Steward, race secretary at Roosevelt Raceway, general manager for the Tattersalls Horse Sales and general manager of The Red Mile at Lexington, Kentucky. Walter Gibbons died in 1975 in Portland, Maine.
